Salon Visits

Do you dress up a little to visit your stylist?

For my most recent appointment with my friend Myra, who is also my stylist, I wore jeans with a nice jacket and a layered tank top with animal print booties.

My logic has always been that if you dress nicely in attire that represents your style well, you will be more likely to get a cut that makes you happy. This holds true especially if the stylist has just met you.

Hairstyles are the accessory we wear every day. Never underestimate the power of a good cut and a color that is complementary to your coloring.

I always arrive on time or even a few minutes early in consideration of my stylist and everyone else who has scheduled time with her for the day. Respect for my stylist and the other patrons includes dressing for the visit, showing up on time, leaving my cell phone in the car and always speaking in a low voice. For many of us, this is one of the few times we get to relax and be pampered. I never want to interfere with a woman getting pampered!

The BCBGMAXAZRIA Bowie jacket is from Saks Off 5th, as is the draped crossover top and the French Connection animal print ankle boots. The ankle jeans are old from Chico's. The chain bag is old from Express.

Styling tip for the day. Wear a short jacket with a longer top to look more slender.

Thank you for joining us on this journey through midlife and beyond. The second fifty years are truly the best!

Your shoes always elevate your outfit and add an element of "dressiness" to casual. I don't usually wear heels which makes it tricky to keep a jeans look from being sloppy. I, too, dress for my lovely stylist. I remember, when I was a young mother, dressing up to go to the pediatrician's so the doctor would consider me a serious, caring parent. Isn't it funny how we use dress to convey a message.

Adorable ! I to arrive early, with respect..I've been known to leave a long time salon because it got to chattie...this is 'me' time.
And almost always treat myself after..wine or sweet..or a little retail shopping!

Susan, how true it is about dressing well for your hair stylist. Mine has been cutting my hair for years: a good basic wash-and-wear cut that changes little. We live in a rural area, and it's all too easy for me to show up in country grubbies to save time, but I've noticed that if I take the time to spiff up even a little, with dark wash jeans, makeup, and nice earrings, she takes a little more time and gives me a better cut.

Beautiful outfit Susan! I'm going to my stylist on Friday and this was just the inspiration I needed to put more effort into my appearance for such appointments. How we dress for our stylist is probably very helpful to them in guiding us to cuts and colors that tie in with our personal style. Great post--thanks Susan:)!

No, I don't, because I go to one of those discount haircut places.

I am making an effort outside of that, and was recently told that I look like I walked out of the pages of Vogue. Maybe that was an exaggeration by my acquaintance, but I was wearing the column of color idea: a coatigan and long summer scarf in coordinating colors. It cost $32.50 for that look, so I think a few minutes watching scarf-tying videos was worth it!

Cute outfit. Your hair amazes me with the color changes depending on the lighting.

I'm always afraid to wear a "good" pice on top because I get hair color every time I go and I'm always fearful color will bleed even though I'm wearing a cape. Am I being unrealistic?

You look nice. I go somewhere inexpensive myself.Ijust try to wear something I can take off without messing up my hair if I really like the cut.

No! That has happened to me and ruined a favorite top. The place I go now has everyone change into big, black, snap-front coveralls. I really appreciate that!
