All About Handbags

Today, I share some of my handbag care and storage tips with you, along with a new giveawayWatch the video below for more info on how you could win this bag by Michael Kors.

The built-in shelves in my closet are the perfect place to store bags and clutches, as well as cuffs and bangle bracelets.

A couple of years ago, I started using dust covers to protect my bags. I also keep them stuffed with tissue so that they don't lose their shape. I am making smarter purchases now, so I will be keeping my bags for several years, which means I want to take care of them.

I store clutches in a drawer for easy viewing and to keep them free from dust.

This video shows how I organize what I carry in my bags to switch them out so easily. You will also learn how to enter to win the bag I am giving away on the 4th of July!

Congratulations, Pat Willoughby!
You are the winner of the Michael Kors handbag giveaway.

I want to be just like you when I grow up! I am looking at 59 this Sunday and you have helped me realize life isn't over yet. I actually like growing old with you and your graceful personality. I recently had my colors done and I am Spring. But I can't shy away from black, it is so basic especially for hand bags. I find mostly silver & black accessories so the gold would fit with my new style and some of the old stuff that I am still wearing. I might not always comment on your daily post, but I do look forward to reading them! Take Care! KJ

Beautiful bag. And great advice. I use the pouch method of organization too because I love to change bags often.
As always, great post.

You truly are an inspiration to us women "of a certain age" (I am 54). I always look forward to reading your new blog posts and it's just a bonus when you decide to give away one of your lovely bags! Keep doing what you do....you are great at it! (And keep deleting the negative commenters. Your blog is obviously not for them!) Enjoy your trip to California!

Good morning Susan,
I have been following you almost from the beginning, love your advice and videos! I also started eating my adaptation of your morning cereal, everyone loves it and I have converted my sister, husband and best friend to it. I have lost 20 lbs. since I started reading you and feel much better. I would love this bag as I live in a rural area without decent shopping, my sisters are in n.j. and always carry 400.00 kate spade and coach bags and that is where I feel frumpy. When I visit them I definitely feel like the country mouse.
I have to tell you that I teared up at the part in your video about wanting to help women who feel ignored, I am 63 and know that feeling. I sensed such tenderness coming from you. Thanks for all you do. Dale

I so love your styling tips! Shopping can be frustrating at times; many stores seem to be divided into "young" and "old". I've been following your blog for a few months now, and I find myself thinking "Would Susan approve of this outfit?", not in an effort to copy your style, but to determine if the outfit I'm considering really expresses my style. Sincere thanks!

I am a teacher who teaches a college and career class to middle schoolers. My challange is dressing professionaly as an example for my students on my budget, also what is age appropriate, especially when I don't feel my age. I so appreciate the style tips and examples that you have graciously shared on your blog. I feel like I have a fighting chance to not only be an example on professional attire for my students, but I can compete with my younger coworkers. Thank you again for sharing your styling tips with us!

What a lovely and generous give-away! I would love to own that stunning bag. I, too, use my bags for several years and appreciate your tips on keeping them looking like new.

I just turned 67 and do find keeping a positive attitude about my changing body very challenging. It takes a lot of work and a dose of reality to accept what you can and cannot change. Your styling tips have been invaluable, and I look forward to them with every post. Thank you and have a wonderful trip to LA.

Thank you for showing us how you organize your bag - I wondered how you managed changing bags so easily. Since finding your blog relatively recently, you have inspired me to 'up my game' a bit with my dressing. I don't have to dress up for work, and I have allowed that freedom to lull me into a frumpy rut. I've made a few (mostly painless, lol) changes and my coworkers have noticed and made positive comments. Thank you for the inspiration! And that MK bag is perfect for carrying to work ;-) ...

What a great and generous idea to give away the bag. Thanks even if I am not the winner! I really enjoy and appreciate your willingness to share your fashion knowledge. The blog has been very helpful to me as I progress through my late 50s. I will be 58 in August and am in the process of growing out my hair to its natural gray. I'm almost there and it has been a journey full of ups and downs. Your blog has been very helpful during the process.

Thank you for all you great tips and inspiration. Handbags are something I don't buy often and try to take care of them. I am very careful where I sit them down to take care of the outside and put them in the same place when I come home. To store my handbags I place them on shelves or baskets, but I had not thought of stuffing with tissue and using a dust cover, which is a great tip. I had also not thought to polish them. I love Michael Kors handbags but do not find them on sale and they are out of my budget at full price. I have various colors in my handbag collection but tend to carry black a lot. I look forward to your blog every day. I follow other inspirational blogs but find a variety of helpful information from your blog.

Thank you for the giveaway opportunity! I thoroughly enjoy your blog and gravitate to it first. I've used dust covers for years but haven't stuffed my bags with tissue. What a great idea! I buy my bag covers from the Container Store. I love the tips and advice to keep us looking stylish! Have a safe and fun trip.

What an awesome bag Susan! After being retired for a year, I will be returning to the workforce part-time and the position requires travel. This bag would be a wonderful addition to my travel accessories. Keep up the good work Susan as your blog is my go to site for not only leisurely attire ideas but ideas for my "corporate" look. Thank you for your efforts in being a major player in educating women not only on enhancing their attire, but for bringing out the beauty that's within us all! A sincere thank you for this fantastic opportunity to win this bag!

Hi Susan,

What a great idea to store clutches! I'm definitely going to use that. I have used an organizer bag in my handbag for years but I never thought of using more than one! So thank you for two great tips in one video. I, too, use shoe polish on my handbags and it really does a wonderful job of preserving them. I read your blog almost every day and if I miss a day I always go back and catch up. You have really helped me to develop a look that works for me although I never look as polished as you. Thank you for the chance to win the lovely bag!

Susan,

I know you said your blog is your hobby but it's truly your vocation. It's made such an amazing difference in my life. I'm 61 years old and one day I was searching on line for clothing for women my age and that's how I found your blog. You have opened up a whole new world for me and I truly appreciate it.

I'm in the process of opening a small gift shop in Worthington, Ohio. All of my products are made in the USA. I wasn't overjoyed with my selection, as it's very difficult to find products that are still made here. Then I saw you wearing a Clara Sunwoo tunic. You looked beautiful in it and to my surprise it was made right here in the USA! I contacted Clara Sunwoo about ordering their line and last week I received my first shipment of clothing. I haven't even officially opened my store yet but have already sold many of the pieces. By the way, when I was speaking with Gina at Clara Sunwoo she asked how I found them and I told her it was from your blog. She was trilled to hear it.

I'm very excited about helping women my age find lovely clothing that is comfortable to wear, flattering, feminine, and looks great on. I've also contacted Covered Perfectly and am going to carry their clothing as well.

I tell ever woman I meet about your blog. It's a joy to read and you are an inspiration to all of us.

I thank you for taking the time to inspire, encourage, educate, and for making life after 50 an adventure for all of us.

I have been following your blog for several months and it was perfect timing for me at this stage of my life. I am 56 years young and was having a difficult time transitioning into this new phase of my life as a married, empty-nester, looking-at-retirement, but still working, woman. You are such an inspiration and a breath of fresh air in our youth-obsessed culture. I appreciate your ideas, tips, suggestions and advice, but mostly, your sunny outlook on life. It comes through in every post you make. Thank you for sharing yourself daily with all of us who seek to find that elusive, but attainable, elegant component in our lives, whether it is fashion or fulfilling our dreams. It was always there, but we just have to believe in ourselves.

Your black bag is beautiful, I have just started to change my purses to designers. I am here in Northern Canada and love black as it goes with everything.I don't mind the gold with it even though my hair is like yours silver, naturally curly & I wear my hair the same length usually.
I would love to add Michael Kor to my collection.
Have a great week ahead modelling & I look forward to seeing who wins on July 4th.
Thank You for thinking of us with your generous gift.

There are some days that I just read your blog and think really? I can't do that, I can't wear those heals, I'm not in the shape I'd like to be in after my hip surgery....but I keep reading...and following....and what I do is try and pull out the one small thing I CAN do, I CAN accomplish and do that..I save for things that are reasonably within my grasp and set those as my goals. Today's example of how to properly store your handbags is just that type of example...even if my bags aren't really expensive, I can store them properly. I CAN DO THAT! And little by little, I will be able to treat myself to some nice things...example, I've learned to use my Chicos coupons wisely. :) Maybe 1 or 2 items at a time. It's working...and as a result, step by step, I feel better about myself! I DO appreciate you putting yourself out there. I may not embrace it all....but I am picking the things that work for me...

Oh, Susan! You will probably never know how much you have come to mean to me!I have been meaning to write you for quite a while, so here is the perfect opportunity. I am 61, formerly an active entrepreneur like you, but I've been beset by health issues for the last two years -- often I have to stay in my PJs all day because I just can't get dressed. But I am finally beginning to recover (although it is painfully slow), and seeing your daily email brightens up my day no end. I am determined to regain my health and also my style (the PJs need to go!) -- and your blog has given me so much inspiration.

I especially appreciate that you show what works for YOU and explain why, and how our styles will vary according to our body type & personal style. My style is a bit different from yours, but I learn something from you almost every day. Most important to me is that reaching 50+ (in my case, now, 60+) does not mean I need to start wearing "old lady" clothes! You show us every day that it is possible to dress with dignity and still have great, youthful style -- not looking like those cringe-worthy older women who dress from the junior department! You always look fresh, chic, but still appropriate. You rock!

Lastly, reading your story and seeing your (almost unbelievable!) before and after pix has been an incredible inspiration to me as I continue on my own healing journey. (I haven't quite managed a total vegetarian diet yet, but my husband and I have cut back to fish & chicken just a few times a week, and cut out red meat altogether. I can already see & feel the difference!) Anyway, THANK YOU for what you do for so many. I'm so glad to have this opportunity to tell you how inspiring you are -- to me, and so many others.

Dear Susan: Thank you so much for a wonderful blog for women over 50. I recently retired but remain busy volunteering on my State Board of Nursing and spending time with my family. Its not always easy to find fashion advice for the more mature woman and I am so grateful to read your column. I appreciate your helpful hints because I feel that truly taking care of yourself, valuing yourself, are things that often get lost along the way as we age. You are showing us daily, through your posts, ways to value ourselves and enjoy a happier life.

Thank you for the opportunity to win that beautiful handbag. I love handbags and love how polished the right one can help you feel. I hope this one finds a home with me!

Hi, Thank you for doing this great thing. I often shop at TK Maxx (I think that is the U.K. euivilent of TJ Maxx). Your blog has given me so much confidence. By the time we reach our 60s we are supposed to know our style and have confidence, but this isn't so. I need to be told that such a thing looks good or this is the way to do that. I am an intelligent woman but never had confidence. Being brought up in the 50s, it wasn't 'the thing' to be told that you looked good, that would make you big headed, so it has taken me a long time to learn. Thanks for your blog.

Thanks to your advice I have lost 30 lbs by following your recipes and Dr. Fuhrman's book. You continue to inspire me daily and for that I am so very thankful. You have been such an inspiration to me. Not quite a year ago I drastically changed my diet for health reasons. A trip to the ER woke me up big time. I went from 210 lbs to 143 lbs at present. No diet, just an extremely healthy diet somewhat similar to yours. I'm 58 yrs old and feel better than I have in many years. Your blog has helped me realize that 58 doesn't mean dressing like an old lady. That there are so many options for us that work beautifully. Because of you I have learned to go ahead and wear the shoes I love, even if they have four inch heel. I could never have walked in them a year ago, but now I can! Fashion is so much fun now and you are helping me learn so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! My coloring is pretty much opposite from yours...brown hair, warm skin, but with blue eyes, so the handbag with gold metal would be perfect!

Hi Susan -
I have recently found your blog and am finding it quite helpful and inspirational. I have a very different body type and style of dressing, but still have gained valuable information from your posts on finding your style. The posts on which jewelry to wear with which neckline are great and I enjoyed your recent posts on dressing outside your comfort zone and trying new things. I lost about 40 pounds within the past year and am much more interested in "dressing to impress" and in not wearing the same things over and over.
Thanks for the chance to win.

Hi Susan, I really enjoyed your video. Your blog has been a great help to me as I have transitioned into retirement. After years of corporate fashion, I was completely lost on how to develop a more casual look that wasn't frumpy! Business suits were like wearing a uniform to me - no thought and little sense of personal style...
I have recommended your blog to several of my friends. One of them found it interesting but commented to me that the only thing she thought I had in common with you is our name.
I guess in a sense that is true. I am tall, long (face, torso, and legs), and have thick, medium brown hair with golden highlights(no gray yet!). I go to perhaps 1 formal event every 2 years. However, your suggestions cross all types of body shapes and life styles.
I am gradually learning what "my" style looks like. For example, after reading one of your blogs on necklines, I realized that boat neck necklines are not flattering for me. Period end of story! I went to my closet and donated every boat neck top in my closet to charity for victims of domestic violence.
From reading your blog, I am gaining an appreciation for how a purse can complete a look. Therefore, I have been trying to change purses more than once a year. Your idea of little bags inside the purse is the key! Hope I win that lovely handbag. Have a great 4th of July!

Sandy said...

Hi Susan, thank you for answering the question that I ask myself every time I receive your email - how and why does she change her purse so often? It is a big pain in the you know what to me!!!! Thank you for being an inspiration to someone like me who is fashion challenged. I look forward to receiving your emails every day!! Keep them coming!!!

When I change handbags I'm throwing all my stuff out on the bed and quickly throwing it in another bag trying to pack it in just so. When running short on time I often don't change bags because of how long it takes me. I'm going with your idea and then I can just transfer them from one purse to the other. Thanks.

Jan Maier said...

I've been using that same system for awhile now and it really does help even though I don't change bags as much as I used to.

The bag give away is so generous and thoughtful. I love the bag but will pass on being considered as a potential winner. I've downsized again and my closet space is quite a bit less. I gave away a few of my own bags due to lack of space. Life is good though and I wish good luck to all the followers who hope to win the bag. XXOO

I recently discovered your blog and have been inspired to rediscover my style compass and fashion sense despite being over 60. I realized it is ok to wear what you love and what you look good in whether it is the style trend or not and have gotten more compliments than in years. I always carried one purse almost year round but learned from looking through your past posts how to add color pops or the finishing touch to and outfit with a cute purse. It always aggravated me to move all that "stuff" from one purse to the next I recently discovered an organizer bag on Amazon designed just for that purpose. Now I just slide that one bag from one purse to the next much like you do with your individual bags. Thanks for sharing your ideas and style sense!!!

Hello, I enjoy reading your blog! I've heard you mention Off Saks 5th avenue many times and I finally visited ours to discovered 2 pairs of shoes you've shown that I adored! So now I have "glam gams" with these beautiful shoes! That is what jumps out at me the most with your blog...amazing shoes! I realized how a wrong pair can "date" us. I've had success finding 2-2.5 inch heels and I can walk around all day in them..they are out there and once you find them, you feel like a million bucks!

Thank you, Susan, for all of hard work on this blog. I love your style and the clothes you wear, but most of all I love your attitude. You are so kind and generous with your praise and you try to make people feel good about themselves which is so important. Keep up the good work!

Hi Susan! I think you're fabulous and not just because you are giving away a bag. LOL I use a pouch method in my purse as well. I love your drawer for your small/evening bags. I may copy that.

My mother, who is proof that Divas raise Divas, finally has a smart phone. She is 83. My daughter and I have been trying to teach her how to use it. We opened an Instagram account for her, just so she can follow family. In addition, I chose just 2 bloggers for her to follow and you are one of them. She will probably never click on the heart to like anything, however, she loves your style already and will be following you. She's "obsessed" with your shoes. (We took anything over 2" wedges and heels after her knee replacement.) Her insta name is GrandmotherBruce.

Have a lovely time in LA! Safe travels.

Hi Susan! I have loved reading your blog posts and have learned so much about style and class from your posts. I appreciate how you do what you do with kindness, as that is unfortunately a rare quality these days. I especially have enjoyed your healthy eating tips, as I've found over the years that good nutrition has helped me be my best mom, teacher, athlete, daughter, wife and friend. Thank you for sharing so many good things with us! Sending thanks and a big hug from Texas!

Hi Susan,
I enjoyed watching this video about how you use your handbags. I like the idea of the pouches inside. I use a handbag organizer which helps me a lot. Keeps the inside of my bags clean, too! I will be turning 60 in October and I have to admit the number is really bothering me. I find you blog to be an inspiration to me, and for that I am grateful. Your black Michael Kors bag is beautiful and that is so sweet of you to gift it to someone. You're a beautiful and generous woman~

I started following you to keep up with your hairstyles. We love your facebook "Outfit" posts as well. Thank you for being an inspiration to a gal who needed it at a tough time in her life.
I would love to win the handbag for Beth. She would absolutely love it!!!!

Hi Susan! Great post about organizing and storing handbags. I have to say the gift of the MK handbag is very generous and I hope someone gets it who will really appreciate it and will use it often. It is really too nice to sit in a closet not being used.
Summer is here and I am decorating our back porch so it is pleasant to sit outside and listen to the wildlife . I love a beautiful landscape so I am constantly working in the yard. Maybe one day I can visit Ashville and Blowing Rock.
Thanks for inspiring me to eat better- I have lost 26 lbs and my doctor is so impressed. My skin and my attitude is so much better!
Have a wonderful week!

I would love to win the Michael Kors handbag - I am disabled and use a walker for balance and support (no more falls for me, I HOPE) - this type of handbag would allow me to secure the handbag from loss or theft while holding onto my walker while in movenent. I love your blog and style of dressing because it can be doable at any price point which allows someone like myself on a disability pension to HAVE STYLE on my terms. One feature you have shown recently is flat shoes which is a necessity with rheumatoid arthritis even though I would love to wear heels. Flat shoes can be very stylish with the right style pant (in my case, slim straight leg). THANK YOU FOR BEING A GREAT INSPIRATION.

I look forward to your posts and have learned so much from reading them. Your photos and videos are wonderful as well. Thank you for sharing your handbag organization tips. I love your fashion/beauty blog! I am 2 sizes larger on the top, and I enjoy your style tips. Much to my dismay, I have struggled with an increasing waistline, since I turned 50, five years ago. I find your blog to be an inspiration. I used to wear a misses size 8, but as my waistline increased, I had to start buying a petite size 12. I found that when I tried on larger misses sized jackets, the sleeves were too long! I loved your makeup tutorial! I also love the way this blog post shows us how to store clutch bags in a drawer standing up! I will try this! Keep up the good work!!! Thank you so much for being an inspiration! I have looked for other fashion blogs, but none are as good as yours! Yours is the only one I look forward to reading on a regular exercise basis!

I must say that your salient advice is always much appreciated and whilst on the face of it your blog is about finding one's own style and eating better it is in fact about much more. About finding your confidence in life and never giving up and the rewards such commitment to ones life does bring. You are a role model for many more people than you can ever possibly realise. Your adventures with Mr Mickey are the highlight of my day on many occasions.

All the best and good luck to all

Hi Susan,

Thank you for such an informative and interesting video! I'm inspired by your organizational tips and since I sew, decided I can make cute dust covers for the bags I have. Thank you for giving me a light bulb moment. I love purses, always have been a sucker for nice leather. However, I always seem to have other purchases that have to be made and then kick myself for not looking at purses. So I must say, the Michael Kors bag is just the stunner I would be attracted to. Thank you for sharing it. And thank you for your very inspirational and from the heart message. Cheers!

However, as your pictures portray, I am also learning how to embrace my style, enjoy fashion, and participate in life with more joy and enthusiasm. I would like to be entered into your drawing for your MK handbag. Of course it is gorgeous and I will love it (and use it!) but it will be so much fun to tell everyone I got it from my instafriend Susan at fiftynotfrumpy! I have become an avid follower over the past year and have made significant changes to " un- frump" myself. My daughters have started to ask me for fashion advice and my fourteen year old granddaughter confided to me that she is glad I'm not an "old looking Nana"! I had never stepped foot in a gym but I joined in April and love it! My doctor wanted to know what I was doing to bring my cholesterol numbers down to keep me off meds! I have six grandchildren and want to be able to stay active with them. There is life after sixty, and I'm loving it. Thanks for the inspiration!!!

Hello, Susan! Thank you so much for your blog and your encouragement to those of us on the "other side" of mid life! I've recently started paying more attention to caring for my health via nutrition, exercise, and rest as I get older, as well as investing in my general well-being a bit more than I used to. I like to get a regular pedicure and manicure and tend to spend a little more for quality, classic, staple pieces that will stand the test of time for my wardrobe. Shallow as it may sound, these little things make me feel so much better about myself! Thank you your blog and videos, through which I've learned that these things are OK, and not selfish! :-) I'd love to win this handbag, and thank you so much for the giveaway.

I had never heard of Eat it Live, but have just finished reading it, thanks to you, and I plan to start implementing it soon. Enjoy your trip to LA. I have recently moved to Saudi Arabia from California and I miss it. Boy, do I miss it. Here, a female is not allowed to try on garments before purchasing them. One must buy it and run to the restroom to try it on, then return it if it's not the right fit. It just adds to the adventure. The handbag is beautiful, but I am not commenting as an entry. I just want you to know your blog is gift enough to me.
Always be happy,

I love this handbag! It is so me! It reminds me of a bag by Hammitt in Monkees that I keep eyeing, although not in the budget right now. I have a black and gold Kate Spade watch which will look fabulous with it! I stumbled across your blog today and started following you. I have been intrigued catching up with your blog posts for over an hour. I love your style and personality and couldn't stop reading! What you share is interesting and beneficial in my line of work! I loved the proportions tips, and being a jewelry designer, especially the modeling poses. I am 61 and live in Johnson City. I am also at the age of dressing more comfy, but want to look well put together (without looking like I tried). The most fun for me is to decide what jewelry to wear or design to finish my look. I heard you were going to wear one of my necklaces in the fashion show at the Wine, Women & Shoes Event! I was thrilled and was hoping to meet you that day, but it was much busier than I expected and as a vendor didn't get to watch the fashion show. The girls in Monkees told me that one visit, as I go there often. Krista is a big supporter and has offered my line since last October! Krista even introduced it at their retreat and now Beauty In Stone has been accepted by corporate as an approved brand and included my line sheet in their latest email update! This is a fun journey and such a passion! I will be looking forward to your future blog posts! ...and looking to see who the lucky winner is of this gorgeous handbag!

I have always loved exploring fashion and style and have always been pretty sure I have myself in the mist of it. However, I must say that it's been a bit of a struggle to figure this transition out as my body and mind are changing in my 50s. But I know that I'm up to the challenge! Your blog has been very inspiring and helpful to me as I process this awesome journey into the 50s and beyond! Hi Susan, I think that you doing a purse give-away to one of your followers is a very kind gesture. I imagine your blog must require you to devote a fair amount of time to it, which illustrates that you do it for those of us who need to see that we don't have to disappear into the woodwork once we are passed our "bloom." The truth is all of the preconceived notions that women have about themselves are just stereotypes that we have bought into, because that is how we are socialized to think about ourselves. So, thank you for helping me, and many others like me, stop seeing ourselves as "wallflowers."
