I decide what to wear based on the weather first and then what is appropriate for the event. Finally, to complete the look, I added my personality with accessories.
The day after returning from Los Angeles, we went out to dinner. I was still in a Southern California state of mind, so my makeup was minimal, and I wore cool shades of soft gray and white with sandals.
When the weather is hot and humid, I wear minimal makeup because I know it will become smudged little rivers running down my face within a few minutes. So instead of my usual liquid foundation, I blot on a bit of loose Lancôme powder down the middle of my face and on my cheeks near my nose (not in the eye area!). My eye makeup is also minimal in warmer weather.
The best place to match your foundation is on your upper chest (décolleté area). If it blends and becomes invisible there, you have the right color. Don't you just hate it when your foundation makes your face look like it belongs to another body?
This effortless, breezy style includes a high-low hem tank top from White House|Black Market. The long, almost sheer silver-gray cardigan is old from Chico's. The white light-weight jeans-style pants are old by Fabrizio Gianni.
Accessories include sunglasses by Kenneth Cole Reaction via T.J.Maxx, an oversized face silver watch from Michael Kors, with a small silver link bracelet, which was a gift from Mr. M.
The bag is old from Express. The shoes are old by Calvin Klein.
When I shop, it usually replaces something that is starting to look too worn, not because I want the newest trend. Instead, I look for classic pieces that look good on my frame, in colors that flatter my complexion and can be mixed and matched with what I already have. Those are my secrets for a successful and carefully edited wardrobe that works all year round.

Susan: LOVE, LOVE , LOVE this outfit! I love everything about it. On a side note, missed your posts while you were away. Morning coffee just wasn't the same. Glad you're back.
Happy 4th to you. I also missed your inspirational posts. Your outfit looks so cool and breezy. Coming from Miami, where it is hot and humid year round, cool and breezy is a must. Carmen posted this
Would you consider doing a post on how you manage eating plant-based while traveling? #missedyourposts
Hello Susan. Those whites and breezy greys are beautiful colours and suit you perfectly. Specially adore the heels. Hope your trip to Cal went well :) Helen
I LOVE this look!
I,too, would like to know how you handle meals when you travel from home by plane, or even when you go on long drives and are not able to prepare meals in your own kitchen. Most of the time, I travel alone, and I don't stop at fast food places, nor am I comfortable going to a restaurant just for a salad. I do pack healthy snacks such as raw nuts and dates and beverages like coconut water and iced green tea, but it's actual meals that I have difficulty with.
Just had to say that this is one of my all-time favorite outfits on you - it looks cool, clean and feminine all at the same time! Perfect.
This look is elegance defined. The cardigan is stealable!
Icy cool!
Monotone without monotony. For those with a warm complexion, a light taupe or beige could take the place of grey. This is a very slimming and chic way to go.
This may just be my all time favorite outfit.
Susan, You look fabulous as always! What a wonderful summery outfit! Would you consider a post about how to choose which colors compliment our individual complexions? I have difficulty with that. Also, I'm attempting to follow your way of eating for health purposes as well as weight loss. I'm curious...did you just change your eating cold turkey or was it transitional? Thanks for your inspiration!
Teresa R, colors that make you look well rested and healthy are the ones you should wear. For example when I wear khaki near my face I look very sick. I stopped eating processed foods including meats as I was reading the book "Eat To Live". Feeling great is the reward for not eating junk. I haven't had even a cold in five years.
I was inspired by you to eat a plant based diet last December. I have stuck to it and now it is a habit. I do not at dairy or beef or pork but I do eat fish and seafood. I eat turkey or chicken occasionally. I found a non dairy butter (Smart Balance) that I use once a week or so. I only eat whole grains, fruit, nuts, and veggies. I have lost 26 lbs. I went to see my doctor last month and she was pleasantly shocked especially when she saw how the results of my blood work . Keep it up! I am on a maintenance diet now, just trying to maintain my energy level and weight. Thank you Susan! No more processed foods for me!
P.S- I googled vegetarian restaurants for dining out options but I find great salads easily. And most grocery stores carry fresh fruits in small containers. Add granola and walnuts and you are set!!
I love this outfit! It looks great on you and it's very....peaceful....lol at least that's the feeling I get when I see it.
I recommend Estee Lauder Double Wear make up. It is lightweight, has good coverage and doesn't melt in the heat. Sheila Jenkins Northampton England
