Birthday Celebration!

The new website has been published!
Please visit me there for future posts.
You can find me at http://susanafter60.com/

Mr. Mickey treated me to a wonderful weekend away at the Westglow Resort and Spa to celebrate my 60th birthday.

I wore a tank top and jeans with flat shoes for traveling.

The Westglow is situated on the top of a hill overlooking fabulous mountain ranges from every angle.

We stayed in the Grand Master Suite during this visit. Every elegant room in the mansion is decorated with different fabulous antiques.

I turned 60 this year. When I was much younger, I would have considered that a depressing thought. Now that I have arrived, I feel as if my life is just beginning. The difficult training part has been successfully completed, and now I am ready to start enjoying my life.

I found the white linen-like jacket on a sidewalk sale rack at Stein Mart last month. It is by Calvin Klein. The Michael Kors jeans were also purchased at Stein Mart last year.

The gray tank top is a couple of years old from Chico's. The scarf is by Halston Classic, and I think I got that one at Nordstrom. It is a large chiffon square which I folded on the diagonal to form a long thin scarf. I just draped it around my neck for a pop of color and pattern.

The bag was from Express last year. The shoes are by Circa Joan & David via Saks Off 5th.

When I buy simple basics in solid colors, I find that I can wear them in a variety of ways, and for years to come.

This will be the final post on this Fifty, not Frumpy blog site. My webmaster has created a fabulous new website. Which includes a shopping cart where I have added some of my own items at a fraction of their original cost, some never used or worn, some gently worn and well cared for. My beautiful line of classics in the comfortable crepe fabric will are offered on the new site as well as a huge collection of new scarves.

Some women have written to say that they resent me telling them what to wear or how to live. That isn't the case at all. I am simply sharing what has worked so well for me. If you wish to copy my ideas and anything I share, you are welcome to use them as you wish. Several women have also written to say I look a lot older than fifty. Hopefully the new site, SusanAfter60.com will help to clear things up a little. Please visit me there.

I freely share what I have learned in the hopes that you will benefit from my experience.

Thank you for joining Mr. Mickey and me on this journey through midlife and beyond. The second fifty years are truly the best!

Happy birthday, Susan! I am sorry that some people feel the need to be so negative and hurtful. I don't know but maybe that somehow makes them feel better about themselves. I certainly enjoy reading your posts and wish I had a little bit of your self discipline. You are a beautiful lady! I look forward to following you into the next adventures in your blogging life! Have a great day!

Good luck with the new site. I enjoy reading this one and will try out the new. Thumbs up for trying to help those of us that are struggling with figuring out the options out there. It is impressive that anyone dares put yourself out there with the potential for slights from hidden masses. Jayne

My heart sank a little when I read this was your last post and then I was thrilled to read you are continuing . You are a wonderful inspiration and such a pleasure to follow. I will never understand why people can be so hurtful when they do have a choice, the choice being to follow your posts or not....
Best wishes for your future endeavours, you have worked very hard to become the person you are today.

Happy Birthday Susan. Today you enter your 60's and I enter my 70"s. My 60's were wonderful years. I did a lot of traveling and saw many beautiful things in the world. I also saw the birth of my beautiful granddaughter. I hope you are able to enjoy the decade as much as I did.

Happy Birthday Susan!
I have enjoyed reading and following your Blog for the last few years and am so glad you will be continuing. I admire that you continually evolve and change your style, which inspires me to try new things. How many of us have been guilty of wearing the same lipstick colour for years or the same hairstyle? Change is good!
Looking forward to your new Blog page and shopping....... hoping my favourite cardigan/jacket and necklace will be there. :)

Happy Birthday Susan! I'm just in front of you by a year -- so far, sixty is great! Have a wonderful one -- can't wait to see your new blog.

And gracious! Sigh, Sometimes I just don't know what's wrong with people who want to suck the joy right out of life...how sad for them!

All the Best!

Happy Birthday! I will turn 60 in 6 months and I am so happy about it. Retirement from my full time job is on the horizon and I have so many other things I want to do.

As far as getting negative emails from readers, I am not surprised and I hope you have a way of setting them aside and ignoring them. It says so much more about their level of comprehension and understanding that it says about the content of your blog.

I love knowing what works for you and why. Many things you wear would not work for me, because I have also invested much energy into learning what I like I understand my proportions. For example, even if my feet would let me wear high heels, I'd never do it. I am already tall and I absolutely hate towering over other people.

Writing a personal style blog has got to be tough! But I think you strike just the right tone. Carry on!!!

Happy 60th Susan! I reached that milestone just nine months ahead of you. And thanks to you, I reached it in great shape. A few years ago, on your advice, I got Dr. Fuhrman's book and it--and you--changed my life. I lost 25 pounds without even trying after I had struggled for years to do so without budging it! I feel absolutely fantastic and people tell me I look that way too! You were the inspiration! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Can't wait to travel the next decade with you!

Happy Birthday sweetie!
I love the things you share. Your style is not necessarily mine, but as a 51 year old woman, I've been rethinking how I dress as a *ahem* Mature woman. There is nothing worse than an older woman trying to dress like a 20 year old.
I appreciate your insight into why you choose different things. It helps me think out my closet.
I admit I have gluttony of the closet and need to purge like crazy. I want to keep the good ...
thanks for your inspiration. I hope the archives will be here when I switch over to the new site.
God bless!

Susan, Happy Birthday. I celebrated my 45th birthday earlier this month, and want to say that I love your blog. I love the sophisticated simplicity of your wardrobe, and am trying to find my best style, too. I don't understand why people can't either read and enjoy a blog, or move on. I look forward to seeing you on your new blog, and wish you all the best in your next decade. Enjoy!

Happy birthday! I love your blog. You are an inspiration to me. I turn 60 next week--nervous. I am sorry that people feel the need to be cruel because they feel anonymous on here. Shame on them. My question is why are they reading your blog if they don't like what you are saying? I No, these "negative Nancy's" just get on here to be mean and spiteful. Looking forward to your new blog. Good luck.

Looking forward to the new site! I've always felt your site captured a perfect tone of---"here's why I feel great--take any of my ideas fo your own use, and leave the rest!" My style is a bit different than yours, but I love your descriptions of your visits around upper East TN and NC; as well as the sweet relationship you have with Mr Mickey. I'm newly 65 and feeling "myself" like never before---I really do feel that wisdom (finally!!!) comes with age!

also--omg, I would LOVE to be able to wear the stilettos you do!!!

I'm happy you are continuing and had seen the new title in your instagram posts but just thought that's what you used for IG. People who come to a site to be nasty are pathetic people who hide behind the anonymity of a keyboard and a faceless (from their end) screen. It is ok to provide constructive criticism or even a different opinion, but why keep coming back if they genuinely do not like the site? I hope you can ignore them and carry on for the rest of us whole enjoy your posts.

Have a wonderful birthday, Susan. You and Mr. Mickey certainly find some lovely places to visit. I have followed and loved your blog for two years. My colors are different than yours, but you have helped me to define my style and dress my best. I have even allowed my hair to go wavy at times, sometimes with success, sometimes not. Enjoy the sixties. I am 67 and have never been more content. Time is precious.

Happy Birthday Susan
I am thrilled you are going to continue your blog, your beauty and grace are inspiring. I have noticed you are wearing more flats, you have mentioned that many have been critical of your high heels. I suspect you are doing it to show those who can't or won't wear heels how to style outfits wit h flats. I can no longer wear high heels due to back problems, but I Love how gorgeous and sexy you are in heels. Please not too many outfits with flats!

Happy Birthday Susan! I've followed your blog for quite a while now, and I especially enjoy your post about your day trips and weekend get aways. My husband and I visit the mountains of TN and NC a couple of times each year, and plan to retire to the area, so I take notes on the restaurants, shops and inns that you visit. Your style is classic and an inspiration! I wish you all the best with your new endeavors!

Happy birthday. Please try to ignore those who are less than kind. I think comments like that come from of place of discontent with one's self. With a computer it is so easy to be rude and hide. The major majority of us read your blog and are grateful for your words of wisdom. For those who read your blog and don't agree, the solution is so simple-don't read it.

Hi Susan! I am commenting for the first time to say I can't believe some people feel the need to say they resent you "telling them what to wear." Its a lifestyle/fashio blog-if they don't like it, don't read! Sheesh! Hope the negative commenters don't bother you.

I always enjoy your posts and look forward to the new site. You've always indicated, on your site, that the ideas and suggestions are free for the taking. I can't comprehend how how someone could be resentful. If the information doesn't suit you then find another blog that does. Some people just don't make sense. Anyway, Happy Birthday!

I also appreciate when you say what other shapes or coloring might want to consider. Thank you for your positive attitude and encouragement to make the best of this satisfying chapter of life.

Happy Birthday! What a glorious way to celebrate this special day. In regards to negative comments, I would question why women who don't appreciate your blog follow it. I follow many wonderful blogs (including yours!) and each person has something interesting to contribute. I admire the willingness of the blogger to be "out there" and if I don't agree with everything said, I pass it over or don't follow it any longer. I don't expect the blogger to change to suit me but I have the power to stop following if I want.
Anyway, I look forward to your new site and welcome you to the "60+ club" of which I am an longtime member!

A very Happy Birthday to you! Thank you for sharing your story and your style. (Frankly I'm shocked that there would be any resentful comments. How rude. You have *always* reiterated that you are sharing what works for you.)
Like you, I have recently lost a good bit of weight and must replace my entire wardrobe. I am struggling to transition to a new me in a way that reflects on the outside how I feel on the inside. I've gone from not even looking at myself from the neck down, to being unable to decide what to buy because everything looks so much better. Your posts have been very valuable in helping me to discern and edit in a thoughtful manner!

Happy Birthday Susan. I cannot understand the people who think you're telling them what to do and what to wear and how to eat. They must be jealous because you, very kindly, show clothing that looks good on older women and give tips to help with styling. Your story about transitioning to a plant based diet inspired me; thankfully Dr. Furhman is here in New Jersey and between you, him and plant based eating blog I've never been in such a good position health wise (my surgeon said this this a.m. before my surgery). And you look fantastic; a radiant and sincere smile that touches your eyes is the best beauty product out there.

You're a great counter balance to the media which is so frustratingly focused on youth.

And while I can understand the jealousy that makes some people post negatively (beautiful, successful, and with a wonderful man... some can't handle that, m'dear) I do so wish they'd disappear. Toss them in the circular file.

Happy birthday, Susan, and many, many more to come! I hope this coming year will be your very best yet. Thank you for all the wonderful inspirational posts. I only discovered your blog in January, but you have been a great influence and beacon of hope for me as I transition from frumpy to ... well, NOT frumpy! After reading your comments today about the trolls who make such inappropriate and rude remarks to you, I was going to rush to your defense -- only to find that SEVENTY women have already done exactly that! I hope that gives you an idea of how much the vast majority of us appreciate you and your blog and how very insignificant (in more ways than one, I suspect) those negative Nellies are. Before I retired, at the end of every semester I would read student course evaluations, which are anonymous, of course, and it was easy to focus on the one or two (OK, sometimes three!;) students who thought I was the worst instructor ever, and overlook the fact that the vast majority had much more positive things to say. I hope you will print out all these lovely tributes today and scan them when you've let a negative comment get to you. Thank you again and happiest of birthdays!

My hubby appreciates that I enjoy looking well, wherever our often busy, chaotic life takes us.

Just a comment. We, whom often quietly check and enjoy your blog almost daily would really be disappointed if negative comments dissuaded you Susan, in any way. We, who enjoy it so much, love it and learn so much from it......those who don't can find blogs more suited to their liking.

Birthday Blessings! You and your blog have been so encouraging to me. You have started me on a new, healthier way of eating and a more joyful attitude for living life. Thanks so much. I'll follow you to sixty next summer. Glad to journey along with you.

Happy Birthday, Susan. Hope you continue to live your good life. You help more of your readers than not. I've always appreciated your approach which is to be of service not a hindrance. Since discovering your blog, I now eat the porridge most every day and am down almost 20 lbs and continuing. It is because of you that I'm moving to a better place in my life. I suppose it is because I'm open to learn what you have to say. Your focus is for good not bad. Wishing you continued happiness in all you do. When I get to the appropriate weight, then I'll be wanting to purchase some of your new clothing line. Happy 60th!

Happy Birthday! So looking forward to your new site! I find it hilarious that those women come to your blog and feel the need to write those comments to you- as if a gun was held to their head. Move along if someone's blog is not for you!

A very Happy Birthday Susan! I hope it was a fun day for you.
I am appalled by some of the comments you are getting. It boggles the mind how some people can be so insensitive... Obviously they don't get the point of this blog! I only found you a short time ago, but always enjoy my visits. I can't wait to see your "new" blog.
Take care

Happy Birthday,
The price of looking great, having a fabulous life and being in the public domain will always be a magnet for negative, jealous people,
I have learnt so much from you and you are so generous with your hints and tips. I can't wait for your new blog, I thought for one horrible moment that you were going to stop, I wish you every sucess and I will finish with a wonderful mantra that I read recently to use when people are critical or nasty, all you say to yourself is..... Not my circus, not my monkeys'. .....It really appealed to me.
See you on the new blog which by the way has a much nicer title!

Dear Susan,
First of all, let me express how much I have enjoyed your transformation through the years. It is evidence to all of us that looking your best is a work in progress...that in itself I find encouraging! I have read times when you have stated that you would never wear black near your face again and because I too look "blah" in black, rejoiced! Then I would see you returning to black and sigh. I feel as though you are finding your groove more and more as the years progress. I cannot wait to see the next 10 years! So exciting! Do you look your age? Maybe...but who gives a rat's patoot when you are as classy and comfortable in your own skin as you are! Happy girls are the prettiest!
Have a fantastic birthday and celebratory month! We all will be celebrating with you! Cindy

Happy Birthday, Susan! I will be sure to sign up for new posts on your new blog. There has never been an instance where I felt you were telling me or anyone else what to wear. There is such a thing as reverse snobbery. Mr Mickey sure knows how to make a lady, especially the birthday gal, feel special.

Hi Susan, Happy birthday, I am 63 and the 60s are great. Why do those people even read you if they feel like that? Anyway I am looking forward to your new site. Have a wonderful week. Dale
P.S. Thanks for the tip on the eyebrow pen.

I agree with many of the other commenters. I thoroughly enjoy your blog and I don't understand why people feel the need to spew their negativity. If they don't like what you have to say on YOUR blog, then don't read it! It's not like they are being forced to do so. On a positive note, Happy Birthday and I look forward to your new site.

Happy Birthday. I am 61 and have enjoyed your bog posts for over a year now. You offer some great ttips fior styling in a way that is flattering to each person's shape. I am glad you have found happiness at this stage in your life. I enjoy the posts about the trips with Mr. Mikey. My husband of 33 years likes to go on trips, too. We are leaving for a 2 year journey to England in November. I wouldn't worry about the negative comments. Comes with the territory of putting yourself out there. The positve replies certainly out weigh the negative ones. Looking firward to the new blog.

Happy birthday! I turned 58 in July so I am right behind you! I am looking forward to my 60's as well. I think we just know ourselves so much better and what we want out of life than when we were young. There are so many negative people in the world! I feel sorry for them because it really is a terrible thing to be! I enjoy reading your blog and glad you are going to carry on!

Happy Birthday Susan! You are absolutely gorgeous! I admire you very much. Thank you for putting yourself and your ideas out there for our benefit. I really appreciate it. Even though my body shape is different from yours (I'm a pear), I still gain many great ideas from you about style and lifestyle. Please keep doing what you're doing. Your posts are the ones I most look forward to. Take care, Happy Birthday, and many more. Thanks for showing us how to age gracefully.

Happy Birthday, Susan. My 60's were the best ever and they will be for you too, with Mr Mickey by your side. Thanks for your welcome input...blogging every day is hard work and figuring out how to dress once you are past 29 is an accomplishment. You have been an inspiration to me and I was once a fashionista in New York City. All that trendy stuff loses its luster after 40. You have an elegant and practical way of putting outfits together for the years when one is no longer on parade. I look forward to what you have to say about being sixty and sassy.

Happy Birthday, my fellow Virgo! I turned 67 on Sunday. You look beautiful as always, and I hope you had the wonderful birthday that you certainly deserve. I, for one, am so grateful that I found your blog, and I look forward to continuing to follow you on the new one! All the best!

Happy Birthday Susan! It is always a pleasure to read your blog.....beautiful photography, great style ideas, the best descriptions of weekend getaways, always kind words, so delightful and inspiring! And that wonderful Mr. Mickey...what a treasure! May you both continue to enjoy your lives and thank you for your generosity in sharing with all of us!

Happy birthday, Susan! You look beautiful! I'm sorry people feel the need to be negative and say hurtful things. If they aren't following you for your sense of style and a glimpse into your life...why are they subscribed? What's the point? I hope you can just ignore them. They're being mean for mean's sake.

Happy Birthday Susan! I am so sorry some people felt the need to spread their mean. I am 51 and love your blog site. I read every post and think it has changed the way I try to eat and the way I try to dress myself. It really does make you feel better if you take the time to 'present yourself well'. I have taken to spending more money on less items so I will have a good quality wardrobe, and am buying basics in solids. You have taught me well! I look forward to your new website - please continue.

Happy 60th! I have been following you for a long time, but my first time to leave a comment 😊 I will continue to look forward to your posts!

Happy Birthday, Susan! What a wonderful way to celebrate, and you look beautiful! In my humble opinion, you are never preachy to us as your readers. Anyone who doesn't like what they are reading should go elsewhere. Good for you for handling the criticism with such grace. I'm thrilled that you aren't giving up blogging - looking forward to your next chapter!

Happy Birthday, Susan!! You are a gracious and classy breath of fresh air in a world that seems to be getting more vulgar every day. So sorry to hear about the rude comments, which are completely off-base. Keep doing what you do so well and I wish you all the best!

Happy Birthday, Susan! I have to say I just recently found your website and love it. I had been looking for advice on dressing stylish and yet appropriate for my age. You really know how to do just that. Looking forward to the new website.

Happy Birthday Susan. Many blessings to you and Mr. Mickey. Your look is classic and refined without a lot of fan fair. This is what makes you so unique and why so many follow and read your blog.

Thank you for giving women in our age group inspiration and a positive outlook on the second part of this wonderful life. Your example of cherishing life and projecting a positive self image steps beautifully into the next chapters of our lives. Cheers for many great moments ahead!
