Breaking Rules

Do you have personal rules for dressing that you don't even think of breaking?

I thought it might be a fun exercise to break all my own styling rules in this week's blog posts.

I haven't worn shorts in about twenty years. They don't fit into my lifestyle, and I feel very self-conscious about my left leg's technicolor veins. For the same reason, I rarely wear dresses.

These Bermuda length polka dot pull-on shorts by Tribal Sportswear are so cute that I decided to try them. These items were sent to me by a site that has since closed down.

The shorts are nicely tailored with comfortable slits at the sides, and they end at my best skirt length, which all work well for me. When the occasion calls for something more sporty or casual, this look will serve me well while maintaining my personal style.

Above, I paired the look with a black vest sent to me by Fabrizio Gianni, but the more casual look without the vest is another option.

Flats are another wardrobe item I rarely wear. I do not find flats comfortable most of the time. When I purchase them when they would be more appropriate for the look or the event, I search for a foot flattering slim style that shows the top of the foot and pointed toes.

  1. You may not wear shorts often but those look great on you. Wonderful outfit.

  2. I think you look great but do understand the "leg" issues..I am 16 years older than you. My issues are that my legs/thighs are quite thin...shapely in heels but I don't wear them much if I'm going to be walking a lot. I do wear skirts in the summer though...I feel so much cooler in a dress or skirt. However, over the past few years I'e gotten used to lighter weight long pants/skinny jeans etc. I haven't tried bermuda shorts. I like having the option though.

  3. Hi

I love the outfit and actually purchased two pair of these shorts while in Vegas on vacation (had a great time ) I never tuck anything in because I thought it would show off the middle more. Is that correct? I am small all over except I have a larger mid section I call it my boda belly :).

  4. You look great! I also usually skip shorts and short skirts due to the vein issue, but when I use a sunless tanner, they are much less noticeable.

  7. I normally never tuck in a shirt but this one needed to be tucked here in to avoid looking too relaxed for the other pieces.

  8. Susan,

You look LOVELY in this! You should wear shorts anytime the mood strikes. There are some amazing self tanners out now that are SO MUCH better than they used to be, and would supply coverage to make you more comfortable. My daughter and I swear by Vita Liberata. Cyndi Spivey did a post about tanners that I think you would find helpful. You are just too gorgeous to limit yourself AT ALL! FYI, my 83-year-old DIVA of a mother also uses self-tanners. (It is a true statement that divas raise divas.) LOL BTW, I think I will order these shorts and try to find those shoes!

    Blessings, Brandye

  10. Being busty too, I feel like a sergeant major in a white shirt, but maybe I'll have another go as you look great in yours.
I too slap on the tanner, ignore the veins and enjoy the now!
What a busy time you have ahead - you are one much-in-demand lady!

  11. My ankles are permanently bruised so I never wear crop pants, let alone shorts. But I live in AZ where everyone does!

  12. "Breaking the rules" for dressing - what a fun posting idea for the week! You may surprise yourself, too - this outfit looks great on you and what a nice way to change things up a bit! It's fun when things don't get too predictable - especially when breaking the rules looks terrific!

    Thanks for your inspiring posts!

  13. Susan you look great but I rarely wear a dress or shorts because of the vein issue. I am 5' and I have a hard time even finding nice dresses to wear in the summer. Everything has to be hemmed. I get very frustrated b/c I love feminine dresses and skirts. P

  18. Susan, Are you still posting on questions sent to you, if so, will you address ways to make the spider veins less visible. Just a thought since summer is just around the corner. Have a great week.
