Have you changed your makeup technique over the years? The correct placement of light and dark colors and shimmer or matte finishes can make you look vibrant, healthy, and youthful.
However, the incorrect placement of shimmer can make you look less than your best. I remember putting shimmer on the brow bone under my eyebrows in 1974. I am careful never to do that now because it emphasizes the puffy upper part of my eyelid. If you have a hooded eyelid, you will certainly want to avoid shimmer on the hood because it will make it look more prominent.
Always remember this while you are putting on makeup, light advances, and dark recedes.
You can see more closely in the photos above where I apply shimmer and dark shadow near the outer corner of my eyes for an evening makeup look. I wear a much more natural look for daytime, so it wouldn't even show up that much in a photo.
Notice that I do not add any color or mascara underneath my eyes. That always makes me look harsh, so I skip all that.
I do all the eye makeup first so that it doesn't flake on my foundation.
The video below includes my tips for making up the whole face from start to finish for a light-handed, easy-to-do daytime look.
Getting brow makeup now! Never knew exactly how to do this! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you for doing this Susan - it's brilliant! You reminded me of a few tricks I had forgotten and I learned a few more.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I love your arched eyebrows - many of us would kill for those :)
I do have a question - how do you remove the eyeliner that you apply to the waterline? I used to do something similar with a khol pencil back in the 80's on the lower lash line, but the khol just seemed to wear off during the day.
Love your blog and are so glad you are not retiring!!
Great video and amazing how sophisticated you look when finished. Of course your skin looks fabulous before hand.

The eyeliner comes off when I remove the rest of my eye makeup in the evening. I wash my whole face including my eye area with Neutrogena® Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser and warm water.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Susan; you're the best! This was very helpful.
ReplyDeleteGreat video Susan! I had to smile when you blotted your lips with a tissue - my dear mother loved her red lipstick and I remember watching her blot her lips like that - you stirred a beloved memory in my heart! I am confused about the "waterline" though - do you mean you put the liner under your lashes almost inside your eye and not above the lashes? I just tried to put it under the lashes and felt like I could poke my eye out - or am I doing it wrong?
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and your FB page - glad you chose not to retire!
Thank you for your comment threads92. Yes, this process is called, "tight lining" where you paint the eyeliner on the water line under your eyelashes as opposed to over the top of them.
ReplyDeleteVery helpful, thank you very much, I can never get my make-up right. I am going to watch over again and give it a go. I love your blog and your friendly guidance. Mandy x
ReplyDeleteWow, love this! Great tips for "older" eyes. You look amazing even without makeup - those cheekbones!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this video! Very helpful and I enjoy your calm and pleasant manner. Please keep blogging Susan.
ReplyDeleteSusan,
ReplyDeleteI'll keep your video on my computer as I really need to review it from time to time. Thanks for the great tips.
Have a great day.
Thank you for taking the time to do this video. I learned so much and am most amazed by how many brushes you use. It only makes sense that brushes would give a more natural and finished look ... but I only own two!
ReplyDeleteHi Susan,
ReplyDeleteYour video was so helpful. Thank you for sharing your make-up routine and letting us see you without make up and for acknowledging your flaws (we all have them). Your down to earth manner is very encouraging for women like me who are well into the second half of their lives. After being a single mom for many years, I have only recently started caring about my appearance. Last February I made some dietary changes, giving up all refined carbs and processed foods resulting in losing 35 lbs. I still eat some meat (mainly poultry and fish) but like you have switched to plain water, tea and the occasional glass of wine. I've also started caring more about what I wear and how I look. I decided to let my hair grow out gray because maintaining it was both costly and time consuming. Now I have money to spend on nicer clothing and beauty products. This journey has been so much fun!
I love reading your blog.
Susan thanks for the video. Would you please share the lipstick you are wearing in the photo above the video. You have on a red scarf over black sweater. You have inspired me to wear red but I don't think I have the right lip color.
ReplyDeleteLoved the tip about pressing moist hands over just applied foundation.
Thanks for sharing.
Mariann Reid, thank you for your comments. I used a nude lip pencil from Lancome first. Then I added L'ABSOLU ROUGE Advanced Replenishing & Reshaping Lipcolor Pro-Xylane™ 208 ROUGE DESIR 1951. After I blotted it the same way I showed in the video, I added a bit of YSL gloss to the center of my lips just so they wouldn't be dry. Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Shine Rouge in Danger. (At least, I think that's what I have on.) I always try to match the tone of the lip color to the tone of the top I am wearing.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your makeup tips with us again. You've included a very important part of the routine that I see many women forgetting, filling in one's brows. They are so important and yet many women don't spend any time making sure their brows are neat & filled in if necessary.
ReplyDeleteDuring a women's networking luncheon a business owner, who sells cosmetics, did makeup for a couple of women and when she was done all I could think about was that she totally forgot to fill in their brows so their makeup looked unfinished to me.
I very much enjoy your blog and have picked up a lot of great ideas from your posts. Ensuring that my makeup is complete and VISIBLE is just one.
All the best,
Mary
Just discovered your blog a few days ago through 40 + style. Like it. You sound very honest. The way you expose your life, not only good things but all also the bad ones makes me trust you. I am 64 and surprised myself on last Wednesday to choose my clothes with care (usually don,t do) and making up my face to go to visit my daughter...you are a real example to follow !!! Will also give a try to your diet as I,m overweight....thanks for being so inspiring and looking so close to your readers. Mercedes (writing from Madrid.Spain)
